About the festival:

ESCENA. Oslo Ibero-amerikanske filmdager is a platform for cultural exchange between Norway and the Ibero-American region.

The aim of the festival is to promote the interest in film from the Spanish and Portuguese speaking nations of Europe and the Americas and showcase the vibrant film expressions of these nations.

The films convey social, political, and historical aspects of this cultural context as well as the challenges currently facing the societies of the region. Even though these nations share a common cultural mainstream; they form a rich tapestry of diverse backgrounds that translate into their cinematic expression.

ESCENA also provides a gathering place and discussion forum for film enthusiasts, for those with roots in the region and others who have an interest in Ibero-America.

About ESCENA 23:

ESCENA23 will present 7 films with wide international recognition of great directors and filmmakers from 6 different countries.

This year’s edition brings forward the most recent award-winning films from Ibero-america: Salvadoran Mexican director Tatiana Huezo returns to her documentary roots with her new film “The Echo”. We will also premiere award-winning rural thrillers “The Beasts” and Fogaréu” and the family film “Anina”, a wonderful film full of heartwarming moments.

Also, we are happy to present the Oslo premiere of Pedro Almodovar´s latest film “Strange Way of Life”, the filmmaker’s take on the Western genre starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke.

We are also celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Almodovar´s classic “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” in which the western genre also plays a prominent role.

Finally, we are marking the 50th anniversary of Chile’s 1973 Coup with the screening of Pablo Larrain´s classic “Tony Manero” set in the early Pinochet years. A scathing satire providing a metaphor on what was happening in Chile at that time, about the aggressive influence of US culture in Chile´s society.
