Fogareu

En ung kvinne. I bakgrunnen et hus.

ESCENA. Oslo Ibero-amerikanske filmdager is a platform for cultural exchange between Norway and the Ibero-American region.

The aim of the festival is to promote the interest in film from the Spanish and Portuguese speaking nations of Europe and the Americas and showcase the vibrant film expressions of these nations.

On the border between the real and the fantastic, between the colonial past and the overwhelming modernity of agribusiness, the city of Goiás, in central Brazil, is the stage of a dark and disturbing journey.

Inspired by true accounts, the film takes Fernanda into a trip back to her adoptive family after her mother dies and she sets out to spread the ashes while settling up her inheritance, a portion of rural property that rests parallel to indigenous land. This visit will become a journey of discovery about her secret roots and into the surreal and the mythical.

“Fogaréu” captures a world buried in plain sight, boosting the voices of the tortured and the outcast in a knockout debut that challenges ingrained misogyny, deep-seated prejudice, and still-standing colonial power structures that facilitate indigenous land grabs.

This powerful Opera Prima thriller by Brazilian writer/director Flávia Neves features both Lucrecia Martel and Juliana Rojas as script consultants, and has achieved 3rd place in the Panorama competition of the Berlin Film Festival 2022.
