Island in the Storm – a Musical by Deborah Jeanne Weitzman
An inspiring variation of Romeo and Juliet meets Hadestown musical!

On the eve of a ferocious hurricane, two cultures clash – one connected to the earth, the other to wealth and power – forcing them to choose cooperation or conflict to save the island they love.

The challenges of climate-change need not only be doom and gloom but a chance for transformation.

Synopsis:

On a tropical island in a distant sea, two cultures – one protected and proud of the island and its beauty – and the other – only caring how the island feeds their wealth and power – live at odds with each other. Joanna and Claudio, an unlikely pair from these two different worlds, cross paths amid the growing chaos of climate change with stronger storms, rising sea levels and longer periods of drought.

Hit by a ferocious hurricane, the island’s residents must choose: violent conflict or cooperation. In the end, their survival depends on cooperating. Can they combine the wisdom of the ancestors with modern knowledge, overcome suspicions and challenge old ideas in time to save the island they all call home?

Someone, somewhere, will say, ‘Don't do it. You don’t have what it takes to survive the wilderness.’ This is when you reach deep into your heart and remind yourself, ‘I am the wilderness.’

Island in the Storm is a family friendly musical where we playfully and seriously dig into some hard issues concerning climate change and inequality. Through archetypal characters recognizable from the world of fairy tales and Shakespeare, this story slowly awakens us to our body and heart, in song and movement, so we can take in these hard truths, get inspired to evolve and take action.
