Det blir samtale etter visningen med filmskaper Tommaso Santambrogio, som i tillegg til sine regi-bragder og unike film også blant annet har samarbeidet med regissører som Werner Herzog og Lav Diaz.

I en liten kubansk by, et sted som tiden helt har glemt, møter vi Alex og Edith, et ungt par i 30-årene som pleier et forhold bestående av små gester og ømhet. Milagros, en eldre kvinne, overlever ved å selge peanøtter og tilbringer dagene sine med å lytte til radio og lese gamle brev. Frank og Alain, to bestevenner på ni år, drømmer om å emigrere til USA for å bli baseballstjerner.

Hver av historiene handler om cubanere som planlegger, lengter etter eller er påvirket av andres beslutning om å forlate landet. En opplevelse som dessverre er svært gjeldende for øynasjonen som alltid er fanget mellom ideen om enten her eller der, og de som har dratt og de som blir igjen.

Tommaso Santambrogios spillefilmdebut er et fantastisk fotografert portrett av det moderne Cuba. En bemerkelsesverdig film, i en filmtradisjon nært knyttet til Lav Diaz, med en sanselig gjengivelse av følelsen av både fortidens og nåtidens Cuba.

A remarkable and cinematic film with a sensuous rendering of the feeling of both past and present Cuba.

In a Cuban town, a place that time forgot, we find Alex and Edith, a young couple in their 30s who nurture a relationship built on small gestures and tenderness. Milagros, an elderly woman, survives by selling peanuts and spends her days listening to the radio and reading old letters. Frank and Alain, two nine-year-old best friends, dream of emigrating to the USA to become baseball stars.

Each of the constituent stories deals with Cubans planning to leave the country, yearning to leave, or being affected by someone else’s decision to leave, conveying a sense of life on the island as always caught between here and there, between those who are gone and those who remain.

Tommaso Santambrogio’s debut feature is a stunningly photographed black-and-white portrait of contemporary Cuba. It is a remarkable film, in a cinematic tradition linked to Lav Diaz, with a sensuous rendering of the feelings of both past and present Cuba.
