Dahomey

I dagens Benin lå det i over 250 år et kongerike med navn Dahomey. Rikiet var sentralt i den transatlantiske slavehandelen, og kongen hadde en egen kvinnehær, som man blant annet er inspirasjonen til actionfilmen The Woman King. Flere av de flotteste kunstgjenstandene fra riket ble plyndret, og 26 av dem havnet på Musée du Quai Branly i Paris. Den prisvinnende regissøren Mati Diop følger gjenstandenes ferd tilbake til Benin på en suggererende og nærmest hypnotisk måte. Med sin særegne og visuelt imponerende filmskapning er det nærmest som om gjenstandene vekkes til live og forteller historien om hundrevis av år med kolonialisme og undertrykkelse.

Mati Diop (f. 1982) er en fransk-senegalesisk regissør og skuespiller. For sin film Atlantics, vant hun Grand Prix-prisen i Cannes i 2019, og for Dahomey mottok hun selveste Gullbjørnen under årets filmfestival i Berlin.

Mati Diop's mesmerising Golden Bear winner is a visual and thought-provoking documentary of the highest order about colonialism and oppression, but also about optimism for the future and cultural pride. The film is screened in collaboration with Black History Month Norway and Films from the South.

For more than 250 years, today's Benin was home to a kingdom called Dahomey. The kingdom was at the center of the transatlantic slave trade, and the king had his own army of women, who are the inspiration for the action film The Woman King. Several of the finest artefacts from Dahomey were looted and 26 of them ended up in the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. Award-winning director Mati Diop follows the artefacts' journey back to Benin in an almost hypnotic way. With his distinctive and visually stunning filmmaking, it's almost as if the artefacts come to life and tell the story of hundreds of years of colonialism and oppression.

Mati Diop (b. 1982) is a French-Senegalese director and actress. For her film Atlantics, she won the Grand Prix in Cannes in 2019, and for Dahomey she received the Golden Bear at this year's Berlin International Film Festival.
